Licensing of first specialties at International Humanitarian University began in 2003. The process was very difficult, as it required numerous approvals, including the final signature of the head of the Regional State Administration S.R. Grinevetsky, who had to certify that the specialty is in demand in the region. The first ones were licensed "Management of Organizations", "Management of Foreign Economic Activity", "Enterprise Economics", "International Economic Relations". Every year the range of specialties of the university expanded. In the course of time, "Business Administration" and "Administrative Management" were licensed, and issues of changing the structure of specialists training, in particular, the separation of economic and managerial directions, were on the agenda. Established in 2006 simultaneously with the establishment of the Faculty of Economics and Management, the Department of Management concentrated management specialties in its structure and became the ancestor of a number of other departments of the faculty that gradually separated from it and became independent units.
When creating the specialties of the managerial profile at the faculty, IHU top management came out of an understanding that there were not enough skilled managerial personnel in Ukraine. The readiness of managers to manage industries and enterprises in the context of significant changes in the state was very weak. At the same time, in the processes of privatization, restructuring and corporatization of enterprises a number of fundamentally new tasks for management personnel emerged – in relation to both the goals and methods of management, and in relation to responsibility for various social groups and society as a whole. The management of Ukrainian enterprises, with all the desire to "work in a new way", was poorly adapted to successful management in new, market-based circumstances. What should a company do, which industries should be developed in the first place? What is the emphasis – on the immediate profit or the long-term growth strategy? What investments is it possible to get and how to organize this process? What product should be produced and how to promote it on the market? Ukrainian education was largely theoretical, while in the West, business education is always aimed at solving practical problems. In Ukraine, starting with the Soviet times, students were trained mainly in knowledge that can be reproduced to get corresponding academic evaluation, while in the West they teach skills that can be practically applied, and if they receive an assessment, it is for an economic result. Another disadvantage of the management of those times in Ukraine was the lack of understanding of the corporate culture importance. Company, firm, enterprise are continuation of human qualities of their leaders and at the same time – an environment for the formation of corporate values. Corporate culture replicates itself and it is transferred to managers of the following generations. Management in Ukrainian organizations has traditionally been reduced to the use of authoritarian management techniques, while they are ineffective in the long run.
The long-term strategy of the department is based on the fact that the training of managerial professions should be based primarily on a deep understanding of the economy and subordination to laws that shape a certain corporate culture. Manager is a specialist, who first of all understands – on a qualitative level – the economy and, on this basis, can make effective managerial decisions, forming a certain corporate culture – at the level of enterprise, industry, country.
The department is producing specialists for the educational and professional levels of the bachelor's and master's degrees in two specialties – "Management" and "Public Management and Administration". The specialty "Management" has two specializations (both at the level of bachelors and masters) - "International and National Tourism" and "Sport Management". The last one was introduced in 2017 for the first time in southern Ukraine. The specialty "Public Management and Administration" has two specializations: "Management of International Companies and Corporations" (bachelors, masters) and "Administrative Management and Customs" (masters).
Both Bachelor's and Master's programs meet the prestigious destinations in the West. There are no abstract graduation papers at the department – students prepare and defend master's works on real projects on enterprises orders, among them - the Department of Economic Development of the Odessa City Executive Committee. The direction "Administrative Management" specializes in training specialists for work in the customs authorities, including Odessa custom house.

In all specialties, an advanced course of English is studied.
Each teacher finds his personal approach to the content and format of teaching, especially in the block of special disciplines. Teachers have to defend their choice at weekly scientific seminars of the department, not looking at the scientific degree and the rank of the opponents – only novelty, reasonableness of arguments, and timeliness play a role. The following examples demonstrate the authors' approach to their disciplines.
Programs of the courses "Country Studies" and "Regional Economy of the Contemporary World" (Assos. Prof. T.V. Derkach), in contrast to the typical ones, are in fact special courses, the author's peculiarity of which is systematic study of three groups of problems: common to all countries; characteristic of certain countries (for example, for oil-producing countries with the problem of their incredible wealth and archaism of social relations; island countries with varying degrees of development; mountain countries); of individual character. The specificity of the courses is also aimed at providing future managers and economists with knowledge of the current state of one of the most significant and dynamic forms of organization in international economic relations – international regional cooperation. These courses promote both the development of the economic specialization for students of the specialties "Management" and "International Economic Relations", as well as at the same time developing the skills of implementing a commercial strategy with participation in international regional associations.
At the department, there is practically the only special seminar in Ukraine "Laboratory for the Development of Managerial Skills and Abilities" (Prof. N.P. Kovalenko). In this discipline, students not only study the science and art of management, but also, on a basis of many concrete situations (cases) and with a help of professional-oriented testing, recognize also their personal strengths and weaknesses – from the point of view of them as future managers. In such a way, by the time they graduate from university, each student will receive his own business  "portrait", which is absolutely necessary when consciously choosing a place of work.
Discipline "Operation of the world commodity and raw materials markets" (Associate Professor A.V. Kobylyanska) is useful for those students who plan to work in the future as specialists in foreign economic activity in joint ventures or foreign affiliates, to become employees of customs, who will be employed in positions of customs brokers or plans to pursue PhD programs. The practical component of the study includes the task of economic-mathematical modeling of the consequences of the implementation of foreign economic operations with the use of specialized software.
In the course "Marketing" (Associate Professor N. A. Lebedeva) the focus is placed on solving urgent marketing problems at existing enterprises, in concrete economic situations, using business strategic games.
In the course "Innovative Management" (Associate Professor O.A.  Martyniuk) at seminars and practical classes, students calculate different business models and evaluate the effectiveness of the risks of innovative projects, which is a non-trivial task even for the more skilled professionals.
Discipline "Customs Service of Foreign Economic Activity" (Associate Professor O.F. Zaporozhets) is being read on the basis of the Odessa customs, taking into account the experience of tax and customs administration, acquired by countries with economic, social, legal, cultural and humanitarian conditions of development similar to Ukraine, and with similar trends in social transformations (CIS countries, Eastern Europe, China).
All graduates of the department can find work after graduating from the university despite the high unemployment rate in the country. This non-trivial fact is due to two circumstances. Firstly, in spite of the fact that they are quite young, department graduates are well aware and understand the modern economy – they have already been specialists who relatively free orientate themselves in the world of modern organizations and are able to display their knowledge to the employers. Secondly, armed with management science, they have the advantage of intelligent attitude towards   building a career: they are trained to solve problems analytically and creatively, to gain power and influence, motivate people, manage conflicts and personal stress, create teams, conduct business negotiations and rationally and consistently defend their positions to achieve positive results.
Graduates of the department work in travel agencies, Odessa customs, crewing companies, restaurants, cafes, fitness clubs, real estate agencies, etc.
