As part of the compulsory component of the educational and professional program “Psychology” - “Psychological Assistance to Persons Who Have Sustained Psychological Trauma as a Result of War” - students of the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation of the International Humanitarian University, Bachelor's Degree, specialty 053 “Psychology” attended an event held by military psychologists of military units of the Southern Operational and Tactical Association of the National Guard of Ukraine.
The event combined an interactive lecture and training, during which they discussed the importance of psychological health and methods of psychological assistance in crisis situations. Particular attention was paid to self-regulation and support for people who suffered mental trauma during the war.
“In critical conditions, the most important thing is to maintain inner balance and act according to clear algorithms. This allows you not only to help others, but also to protect your own psyche,” said Lieutenant Colonel Yulia Makeyeva, head of the psychological support department of the Southern Odesa Territorial Department of the National Guard of Ukraine, during an interactive lecture.
One of the most important practical elements of the training was the development of psychological assistance protocols. Thus, the students of the 1st-4th courses got acquainted with the “ICOVER” algorithm used in combat conditions, as well as with the “Four Elements” methodology from the Israel Trauma Coalition, “YALOM” from the Israeli military and the “6 P's Rule” and the peculiarities of providing first psychological aid to survivors of stressful events. The theoretical knowledge of the lecture was then put into practice during the training, modeling situations of real psychological support.
The meeting ended in an open and trusting atmosphere. Psychologists of the National Guard answered students' questions, talked about the challenges of their profession and shared tips on how to maintain mental balance in work processes and personal life.
